Las Vegas is in the perfect spot, not far from the Grand Canyon, a few hours’ drive from Los Angeles, and fed by the great Colorado River, which in turn creates the cities power via the Hoover Dam.
Las Vegas was made notorious in its 1950’s and 1960’s heyday, when Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley ruled the casinos on the Strip. These idols made Las Vegas their own and where they went so did the money. It wasn’t long before ‘Vegas was the most rapidly developing American city.
It is thanks to the Rat Pack folklore that Vegas has such appeal in many people’s eyes. Those were days of hedonism, but also of class. Along with Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Junior and Peter Lawford, Frank’s antics were legendary and perpetuated the intrigue of Las Vegas.
There are also tales of less classy hedonism in Las Vegas, such as Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing chronicles, which are an account of how people abuse the privileges that Las Vegas has to offer. There are also the problems of prostitution and drug abuse, which are both rife in the centre of town, and also on its peripheries.
That said, Las Vegas is seen by most as a fun city, where one can descend upon a lavish lifestyle for one week of the year, chance your arm, and hopefully break even, even if you don’t win.
People will always keep coming back to Las Vegas, and Las Vegas will always welcome them with open arms.
